Air & Ground Source Heat Pumps Explained

Air Source Heat Pumps

ASHP's can be more efficient than other purely fossil fuelled heating systems, because the amount of heat they produce is more than the amount of electricity they use. The amount of heat produced for every unit of electricity used is called the Coefficient of Performance (CoP). Therefore, if an air source heat pump has a CoP of 4, then it will give out 4 units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed.

For example, the Grant Aerona³ R32 6kW model produces 6kW at a SCOP (Seasonal Coefficient of Performance) of 4.62 when tested at a low temperature and in average climate conditions.

This means, for every kilowatt of energy used to run the heat pump, over 4kW of energy is being given to the heating system in return. (Source Grant UK Product Guide)

The 'Boiler Upgrade Scheme' as announced from the 1st April 2023 worth £7500.00 towards the installation cost of your Air Source Heat Pump it really can pay to go green!

How do they work?

Heat from the air is absorbed at low temperature into a fluid. This fluid then passes through a compressor where its temperature is increased and transfers its higher temperature heat to the heating and hot water circuits of the house.

Some Heat Pump Units, such as the Mitsubishi Ecodan, Grant UK and Samsung ranges, are the ideal solution for households wanting to sustain a more green and intelligent form of heating.

Most air source heat pumps convert 75% outdoor air into heat, using just 25% of a home's electrical energy.

Where will it be fitted?

The outdoor fan unit can be floor or wall mounted on specific mounting sets, and they fits neatly to the side of your property.

If they can’t be fitted within a certain distance of your property, then they can be fitted further away using a different system known as a split system. In 90% of cases they can be fitted to or near your property so a monobloc system is usually fine.

The cylinder and main pipework would be sited in a suitable location which would be agreed pre-installation.

How much do they cost?

Ground Source Heat Pumps

Ground Source Heat Pumps are a Renewable Heating & Hot Water Technology

Heat stored in the ground from the Sun is captured in a series of pipes, called a ground collector. This heat then passes through a refrigerant, turning the liquid into a gas, which is compressed to increase its temperature. This then passes over a second heat exchanger to transfer the heat for your homes heating and to provide hot water.

Completely sustainable, no more Oil, Coal, LPG or Gas costs, just electricity efficiently used to provide warmth and hot water.

For every kW of electricity consumed by the heat pump, around 4kW's of heat is generated in return, meaning you have an efficiency of 400% or more.

How Does It Work?

A mixture of water and inhibited anti-freeze is pumped around a ground loop, which absorbs naturally occurring heat. This heat then passes through a refrigerant, turning the liquid into a gas, which is compressed to increase its temperature. This then passes over a second heat exchanger to transfer the heat for your homes heating and to provide hot water.

The heat pump system can generate water temperatures of well over 50 degrees.

This heat is then used in your space heating system, and for your Hot water needs.

FAQ's

How much will it cost?

It could be a lot less than you may think, just contact us for an estimate.

Is everything included?

Where required by the MIS3005 design we must produce for compliance under MCS and RECC guidelines, new radiators, pipework, and valves, including all the building regulations requirements that would need to be met. As well as upgrading the hot water function, to be compatible with your new heat pump.

In short, it usually means a brand new super efficient heating and hot water system is installed for you!

Are the ground works included as well as the geophys survey?

Yes, the best form of ground works would be discussed with you and agreed as required, and this is also included!

How long does it take to install?

Approximately a week for the internal unit and heating / hot water system, the external ground collectors will be dependent on the design, all this is discussed with you during the project design phase.

What is the lifespan?

Once installed, ground source heat pump piping system has an estimated lifespan of 50-100 years, while the heat pump itself can run for 20-25 years.

Do you provide other technology too?

Yes we do, as well as Solar PV, Battery Storage, LED lights, EV Charge Points, Rain Water Harvesting and more click >>>> HERE
